Organizational Overview
Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) combats extreme poverty and gender inequity in Kenya by linking tuition-free schools for girls to a set of high-value, holistic community services for the urban poor. In our model, a girls’ school becomes a portal for large-scale social change.

Through a demand-driven approach to grassroots development, our model extends beyond the schools for girls, broadening outreach by providing communities with integrated basic services through three other initiatives: health, community empowerment, and clean water and sanitation.

Position Overview
The Development Associate plays an important role in supporting and participating in all aspects of SHOFCO’s fundraising and communication efforts. S/he assists the development and communications staff in the management and stewardship of the donor database, supports donor relations, and provides administrative support. The Development Associate reports directly to the Chief Advancement Officer.

Responsibilities
Administrative
Serve as administrator to the Development Team and provide in assistance all areas as needed (including expense reports, general NYC office administration)
Manage and send out SWEP products via etsy store
Serve as first point of contact to general SHOFCO inquiries (phone, email, website)

Individual Fundraising & Communications
Manage donor acknowledgement process, including digital and print acknowledgements
Assemble and distribute monthly e-newsletter
Provide fundraising campaign assistance and strategy for low-level donors (less than $5k) and sponsors, including email and social media drafts, email distribution, list management
Track results of fundraising campaigns and provide updates to Advancement team
Assist with any event planning and scheduling
Support in Salesforce administration, including data entry, producing reports, and data clean-up
Proofreading and editing documents, proposals, grant reports
Prospect and donor research
Support Chief Advancement Officer on Board Meeting logistics, as needed
Work with Finance office on monthly donation reconciliations between Salesforce and financial systems
Manage internship program

Institutional Fundraising
Compile due diligence documents required in grant applications
Conduct research in support of proposals
Coordinate with the programming team to produce donor reports
Proofread reports and prepare for submission to donors
Conduct prospect research of institutional donors and maintain a pipeline of potential opportunities

Sponsorship Program
Assemble and distribute twice-annual sponsorship update
Assemble and distribute quarterly Sponsor Newsletter
Track sponsorship payments, provide acknowledgements, and steward renewals and/or lapsed sponsors
Support as needed to US-based high school students
Manage high-level sponsors and steward renewals

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree
2 years administrative/non-profit fundraising experience preferred
Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office, Google Drive required, SalesForce and InDesign a plus)
Outstanding written, verbal, and organizational skills
Ability to work effectively on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
Some graphic design experience a plus
Analytical thinker with outstanding attention to detail
Self-motivated and goal-driven
Passion for the mission and work of Shining Hope for Communities
Must be able to work out of SHOFCO’s New York, NY office
