Zion Clark is a 22-year-old American professional wrestler. He was born without legs due to a congenital malformation called caudal regression syndrome and was given up for adoption as soon as he arrived in the world, so he never met his parents.

Currently, the wrestler trains six times a week in double shift, with the dream of “one day being part of the Olympic team, and being one of the best freestyle wrestlers in the world.”

He lived in orphanages, and suffered from hunger, abuse and harassment. But sport saved his life and his story of overcoming reached the cinema thanks to Netflix.

“I started fighting in second grade,” Zion told the Daily Mail. “When I was very young, I didn’t know what to do in the first fights and neither did my opponent.” Over time, after much trial and error, he adapted his fighting style until he discovered how to develop his own technique for his condition.

Through his performance at school, Zion earned a place at Kent State University, where he studies business administration.

Kimberlli Hawkins is Zion’s adoptive mom. She took him in when he was 16 and they started a family. “My relationship with her is fantastic. She is the greatest woman I know,” he thanked her. And she revealed that she always supported her love of athletics.

Throughout his childhood, Zion was unable to gain any victory as a fighter. The triumphs began to come when he grew up and his muscles developed.

With a weight of 40 kg. was placed in the featherweight category, with fighters weighing 50 kg. He finished as one of the top eight student wrestling athletes in his country, with 15 wins in 33 fights at Massillon upon graduation.

In 2018 Netflix released a short documentary about the life of Zion Clark.

Zion Clark was born on September 29, 1997 in Columbus, OH.

Due to his condition (Caudal Regression Syndrome…born with no legs), and his birth mother’s inability to care for him, Zion was immediately thrust into the foster care system.

Thus, his journey to find a permanent home and someone to call “mom” began.

Over the course of the next 16 years Zion moved numerous times and found himself in a variety of circumstances and environments…many of them unfavourable.

There were situations when Zion was mentally abused, physically bullied, and underfed…but he remained optimistic (faith in God).

Being physically different from others didn’t help, but Zion used a positive mindset, gracious demeanour, and diligent study habits to make friends and excel academically.

Zion was introduced to the sport of wrestling while in elementary school but initially didn’t fare very well…in fact, he didn’t win a match for several years.

Upon entering Massillon High School, Zion Clark met Coach Gil Donahue who recognized his passion for the sport and relentless work ethic.

A wonderful friendship and bond were forged.

Over the next 3 years, Zion improved his wrestling technique and hit the weight room as a man possessed.

Zion Clark Disease

  • Zion Clark has caudal regression syndrome, which meant he was born without legs.
  • He grew up in foster care and was bullied, beaten, and underfed, he told Insider.
  • Clark is now a successful wrestler and world record-holding athlete.

Clark’s wrestling career took off after being adopted

Clark was born with caudal regression syndrome which affects 1-2 in every 100,000 people.

He was immediately placed in foster care and bounced around nine different foster homes in Ohio and New York until the age of 16, he said.

“I had to deal with trying to survive on my own and just make it through life because a lot of these families were just there for a check,” Clark told Insider. “I was the kid that they got for the wrong reason.”

Clark started wrestling at school, but even before then he was “fighting to protect” his life and was punched in his sleep by other foster boys, he said.

Clark trains hard, focusing on explosive movements

Clark now trains most days a week, both on the mat and in the gym. His workouts are designed to boost his wrestling prowess by focusing on explosive, quick exercises like medicine ball slams, banded dumbbell presses, pull-ups, and dips.

His favourite exercises are box jumps: “They generate a lot of explosive power I can use to transition to wrestling, track or any other athletic endeavours,” Clark said.

He also uses the assault bike and performs hand drills β€” moving laterally and vertically around cones β€” to boost his cardio and speed on his hands.
