Even as the two leading presidential candidates (William Ruto and Raila Odinga) continue with their vote hunting forrays across the country, the decision for running mates still remains hectic and a hard decision for the two.
While Raila Odinga will be looking to firmly hold the grip of his former Western and Coastal region strongholds by picking a running mate from any of the two regions, the urge to woo the vote-rich Mt Kenya region could also tempt Raila to go hunting for his deputy from the region.
This is the same case with William Ruto, who is keen on retaining his Mt Kenya support base as well as dangling his carrot to Western Kenya or the coastal regions, which are now promising to add value to his vote basket.
And on Tuesday evening, former Mukurweini MP Kabando Wa Kabando weighed in on Raila’s option for the deputy, as well as that of DP William Ruto.
According to Kabando, Raila could probably go for former Gichugu MP Martha Karua, having in mind that the two have worked together in the past under the Kibaki government and the need for reformists as a DP for Raila
“I cannot say he will be picked but Martha Karua’s name has popped up as the most probable person because, at the moment, Raila needs a reformist in the position of the Deputy President” stated Kabando wa Kabando
He went ahead to opine that with his rising popularity in the coastal region, Ruto will be tempted to go for one of the region’s governors, with Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya becoming a likely pick for Ruto as his DP in 2022.
“For Ruto he can cross over to Kwale county and get somebody like Governor Salim Mvurya for a running mate because there is that notion that he has Mt Kenya by his side already” stated Kabando.
According to the former MP, there are also high chances that ANC Party Leader Musalia Mudavadi will go all the way to the ballot, and will be tempted to also woo Martha Karua, after today’s meeting between OKA and Karua’s Mt Kenya team.
