The situation is tense at the Irate Kianjokoma shopping centre in Embu North Sub-County after angry residents set fire to a police car during a protest against the deaths of two brothers.
The residents staged a protest following the mysterious death of two university students at the hands of police after allegations that they had been detained for a while.
The residents blocked roads leading to the Manyatta police station before pelting the station with stones as they demanded an answer as to who killed Benson Njiru, 22 and Emanuel Mutura 19.
Locals blamed police for causing the deaths of the two on Sunday after they were arrested by police.
Later, their bodies were found in the morgue at Embu Level 5 Hospital.
Diana Mukami, a cousin of the deceased, said it was unfortunate for the family to lose such young souls.
“What we need is justice for our young boys. It is unfortunate that we are lost, ”he said.
Following the protests and the burning of a police vehicle, anti-violent police officers were deployed to quell the situation.
According to Embu North Sub County provincial commander Emily Ngaruiya, the two were arrested along with eight other suspects for contempt of custody.
Ngaruiya however noted that they had opened a questionnaire and that an investigation into their deaths was ongoing.
